Louis Lewandowski Seminary for Cantorial Training

The cantorial seminary, named after the prominent Jewish composer Louis Lewandowski (1821–1894), who bridged tradition and modernity, prepares aspiring cantors for leadership roles in liturgy, education, and community resilience.

The program equips students to act responsibly based on a profound knowledge of Jewish traditions, as well as to engage respectfully with people and local customs. We train cantors who will strengthen the future of the Jewish community in Germany with empathy and confidence.

At the School for Jewish Theology at the University of Potsdam, prospective Klej Kodesh acquire the necessary background knowledge in theology, rabbinic writings, and philosophy of religion, as well as in the languages Hebrew and Aramaic. In addition, they gain a comprehensive understanding of chasanut, liturgical competence, and—through their academic degree—the ability to engage in well-founded independent study.
